Anterior Loading and Why You Need It

As physical fitness and structured personalized training become more of a priority to mainstream American culture a lot of interesting trends continue to emerge. Some trends are great, others lack substance but one trend that is going strong and is here to stay is the trend of anterior loading as a primary resistance training approach. This training approach is by no means new, in fact it's as old as resistance training itself, but the mainstream culture is starting to discover it and this is a good thing for well informed fitness brands like Sky. Anterior loading put simply means lifting weights that are placed on or in front of the body. Think front squats, goblet squats and things of this nature where the weight is being held in front of the body instead of behind it like you would see with exercises like a squat (back squat) or good morning.

Terry Thompson Motivates Member to Lifestyle Change

When I joined Sky Fitness & Wellbeing one year and one month ago, I weighed 376 lbs. I couldn't sleep through the night as I would wake up gasping for air and experienced joint pain regularly. I was enticed to join Sky by the Sky180 weight loss program. Being a former athlete, I am a competitive person so I thought the competitive aspect would help motivate me.

Meditation: For the Mind AND Body

At Sky, we believe in a balanced approach to wellbeing. To us, this comes from four main components: nutrition, exercise, knowledge, and stress management. While the first three may be easier to quantify, the fourth doesn't have to be as complicated as you may think. Taking a few minutes out of each day to breathe, focus, and get centered can do wonders for your state-of-mind. Start small with some short meditation sessions and watch as life becomes a little more manageable.

If you're interested in meditation, we've found this article to help you get started. Now relax and enjoy.

Spice Up Your Salads

When it comes to preparing salads, the outcome can go in one of two polar opposite directions: despite the noblest of intentions, you slather on so many fixins’ to adorn your once healthy greens that you’re left dining on a main course of sugar and fat with a side of lettuce; or your dedication to healthy nutrition has you crunching on bed of bland spinach accompanied with and equally taste bud-sabotaging medley of veggies you salvaged from your refrigerator. The former deceives the well-meaning into the false sense of security that they are eating a healthy salad (because it’s a salad…how could it NOT be healthy), and the latter is what deters so many from actually eating a healthy one.

Nutritious salads do not have to be complicated or boring, and certainly not unpalatable. They can make the perfect snack, and with the right ingredients can be an entrée all on their own. Making salad greens a staple in your diet provides a delicious source of vitamins A and K, with fiber and folate that your heart and “good” cholesterol levels will thank you for, and you can spice it up with natural, healthy ingredients that won’t defeat the purpose of your salad in the first place!

Stupidity and the Other Biomarkers of Injury

That title got you didn't it? I intended it to be a little catchy but in no way want to imply anything negative about any person. And, on a very real note, I did title this in hopes that many of you will read this to simply gain more awareness about the aspects of fitness training that can lead to injury and hopefully feel empowered to avoid them.

I want to share with you 5 key "biomarkers" of injury that are a fundamental part of the Function Movement Screen (FMS), a mobility screening tool used by Physical Therapists and trainers around the globe. These 5 biomarkers of injury are fundamental to this screening instrument and are central to the curriculum surrounding the FMS and the corrective exercise programming that follows the screening process. So, in a nutshell, there are 5 primary things that typically contribute to injury and I want to share them with you here.

The Biggest Obstacle to Overcome is Yourself: Charlotte's Story

My journey of fitness began about 3 years ago at Sky. I have had the privilege of working with several awesome trainers. During that time I had been in and out of physical therapy, as well as receiving special treatments for multiple joint issues. Due to previous shoulder surgeries and a cervical pro-disk replacement I had difficulty with achieving results as simple as jumping or doing a push-up. To see my “issues” on paper, most trainers wouldn’t give me a chance.

Member Testimonial: Summer's Story

A Private Trainer's Inspiration Leads to Healing

I have always been an active person and Sky Fitness & Wellbeing has been a part of my daily routine for many years.

As a teenager, I suffered a knee injury that was required to be surgically repaired. I was then plagued with numerous knee surgeries throughout my 20's and early 30's. Eighteen months ago, however, I was told that I needed a total knee replacement(tkr) if I wanted to continue to be active and keep up with my 4 children. I had gotten to the point where I was not physically able to do certain things, and it was only getting worse. I was only 36 years old. The thought of not being able to to do the things I enjoyed or being active with my children was not an option, so in to surgery I went.
